Chronemic Nonverbal Expectancy Violations in Written Computer Mediated Communication

چکیده
Computer Mediated Communication Abstract Time related (chronemic) cues are an important component of nonverbal communication. Do they also act as nonverbal cues in computer mediated communication? 55 participants were asked to rate a job candidate described in a vignette. Candidates varied in their valence (high valence, low valence) and in their response latency to an email (normative one day latency, and nonnormative latencies of two weeks, and of total silence for a month). Candidates were identical in all other respects. The results show that the normative online response latency was more expected and resulted in more positive evaluations of the candidate. Complex interactions between response latency and candidate valence were observed. The importance of response latency as a nonverbal cue in computer mediated communication is discussed.

Online Pauses and Silence: Chronemic Expectancy Violations in Written Computer-Mediated Communication
This study examines e-mail response latency as an expectancy violation and explores its impact. Managers evaluate job candidates who varied in their response latency to an e-mail (1 day, 2 weeks, and silence for more than a month) and in their reward valence. As predicted by expectancy violations theory, candidate reward valence moderates the effect of response latency on variables such as appl...

This study examines e-mail response latency as an expectancy violation, and explores its impact. Managers evaluated job candidates who varied in their response latency to an e-mail (one day, two weeks, and silence for over a month), and in their reward valence. As predicted by expectancy violations theory (Burgoon & Hale, 1988), candidate reward valence moderated the effect of response latency ...
متن کاملThe Effect of CMC in Business Emails in Lingua Franca: Discourse Features and Misunderstandings
The paper argues that everyday exchange of business emails produces a development in the work-group relationship, which, in turn, makes new communication styles possible and acceptable by the users' habit to computer-mediated forms, even in unbalanced professional exchanges. The focus is on the (spoken) discourse features of email messages in a self-compiled corpus of selected computer-mediated...
متن کاملSubstitution of paraverbal and nonverbal cues in the written medium of IRC
For a long time, dialogue analysis has separated spoken language from written language. This dichotomy is valid in many cases as it is mostly parallel to the distinction of synchronous and asynchronous communication with the associated affinity to graphic and acoustic media, respectively. During the present decade, many forms of computer mediated communication (CMC) have become widespread. With...
متن کاملONLINE CHRONEMICS CONVEY SOCIAL INFORMATION 1 Online Chronemics Convey Social Information
Chronemic research explores the involvement of time-related messages in communication, and has shown that time is an important component of the message in both traditional and online communication. Social information processing (SIP) theory posits that online communicators exchange social information through chronemic cues. This study points to a gap in SIP theory research, and suggests that it...
